| This
slab had a double meaning; one for the white men, and one for the Shawnees.
The public (white man) interpretation was that this was
a guide for going home to heaven. (See house at top.)All things on earth
were to be experienced and understood before people could reach their
spiritual reward.
The actual meaning, reading from bottom to top, was much more practical
to the Shawnees. That is, that all Native Americans from both sides of
the Mississippi River with the speed of lightning, with weapons, leaving
behind hunting and farming to meet at the trembling of the earth. They
would take back their lands from the white man by peaceable means, or
by warfare, if necessary.Full explanation of the stele on the back of
the piece.
